Item description
This is a great condition vintage novelty bar set made in Japan. Set includes a decanter with cork head piece and main body and two shot glasses. The shot glasses are labeled with Japan and then there is a number 52 / 972. Based on condition and the cleanliness of the cork, which appears as though never wet, this set is really near new. We do believe this set to be pretty vintage but are not sure of the specific era. Judging about the style of majolica pottery and the style of the characters, this appears to be mid-century era at least.
Approximate measurements are:
Barrel basket glasses = 2" tall x 1.5" wide in diameter
Decanter = 8.5" tall (6.25" of which is the body of the decanter) x 4" wide in diameter at the base.
This set is in wonderful pre-owned vintage condition with no damage or excessive wear. Only minimal wear on the painted design. When viewing under jeweler's loupe, you can see some crazing (glaze cracking) in small pieces that you cannot see except under very close (and probably magnification).
History: Tilso Japanese Import Company was founded in 1913, and its products were popular after WWII. L. Batlin and Son originally ran an antique store but after the depression they founded Tilso (a name that was derived from the names of the owners wife and daughter, Tillie and Sonia).
