Item description
Name: Coneflower - Purple
Scientific Name: Echinacea purpurea
Color: Purple
Plant Seeds: Outdoors After Frost / Indoors Weeks Before Last Frost
Hardiness Zone: 4 - 10
Plant Height: 24-36"
Plant Spacing: 18 - 24"
Germination Time - 10-15 Days
Bloom Season - Summer
Light Requirements: Part Shade, Full Sun
Soil Water Preferences: Average - Dry
Other: Attracts bees, birds, butterflies
Sowing: Direct sow in late fall, planting the Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) seeds 1/4" deep and lightly compacting the soil. Some say For spring planting, mix the seed with moist sand and store it in the refrigerator for 90 days before direct sowing; keep the soil consistently moist until germination But i do not do that with my seeda and they germinate just fine by direct sowing them in spring after last frost, just make sure to keep them moist at all times until they germinate. It is much better to use seed trays in my opinion and then transplant them when ready. Thin or transplant the seedlings.
Growing: Water seedlings until they become established. Unlike most coneflowers, Purple Coneflower does not do well in drought conditions and needs adequate moisture. The area should be well-drained to avoid soggy soil, since this can cause disease. Keep competition to a minimum in the first year of growth, since this plant cannot reach its full potential when crowded by weeds. After several years of growth, mature plants can be divided in late fall. This plant attracts hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.
