Item description
This sale is for one (1) framed print ~ Pope Pius XI
He has signed a request for a blessing on a beautiful board which his photo is affixed
Document signed
Measures approximately 15oe x 21oe
Rome, 1928 July 30
Photo of His Holiness measures approximately 4" diameter affixed above text
Text reads "Most Holy Father, Mrs. S.C. Heise family, humbly prostrate at the feet of Your Holiness, beg the Apostolic Benediction and a Plenary Indulgence to be gained at the hour of death, on condition that, being truly sorry for their sins, but unable to confess them and to receive the holy Viaticum, they shall at least invoke with their lips or heart the Holy Name of Jesus.
A scholar with three doctorates from Gregorian University in Rome, he was also an avid and skilled mountain climber.
A theological conservative, Pius XI was more flexible than his recent predecessors in dealings with governments.
With the Lateran Treaty (1929), he normalized relations with the Italian state and secured recognition of the Vatican's independence.
He supported Franco's cause in the Spanish Civil War but abandoned support for monarchical restoration in France and strongly opposed Naziism and communism.
Pius XI prepared an encyclical denouncing anti-Semitism as unchristian, but he died in September 1938 under what some consider suspicious circumstances, and the text of the document has never been published.
