Item description
This is an antique, light blue-green, McElree's Cardui quack medicine bottle. The vintage square, remedy bottle is embossed with McElree's Cardui on one side and Chattanooga Medicine Co on the reverse. There is an encircled mark on the bottom and what looks to be the number 9.. Cardui was introduced in the 1880s but as this bottle is machine made with a threaded screw top, I'd date it between 1905 to the early 1920s. . My father, an avid bottle digger, discovered the vintage apothecary bottle in the ruins of an old homestead in Virginia more than 40 years ago.The bottle is in great shape, without breaks or cracks. Clarity and color are nice but there is some mild calcification deposit from long term exposure. Embossed lettering is sharp. (See Photos) The bottle measures 8.5" x 3" x 1.5".
About Chattanooga Medicine Company and Cardui Wine: The Chattanooga Medicine Company was established In 1879 by businessman Zeboim Patten and a group of friends . Its first two products, Black-Draught and Wine of Cardui, were extremely successful remedies to relieve pain and discomfort and sold well into the twentieth century. During World War II the company became the largest producer of K-rations and a major supplier of ammonia. Postwar products include Pamprin, Flex-all, Icy Hot and pHisoderm. Today the company operates under the name of Chattem, Inc. In 1880, Wine of Cardui was introduced. It was promoted as a uterine sedative or menstrual relief product that supposedly originated with the Cherokee tribe. Wine of Cardui instantly became successful when more than 6,500 women reported being cured from "Female complaints". Although the ingredients included substances such as Blessed Thistle (then classified Carduus benedictus and hence, its name), 20% of the remedy was alcohol. Since women were not allowed to drink at the time, its quite humorous that this supposedly non-intoxicating cure-all was composed largely of alcohol. Ads proclaimed: WINE FOR WOMEN! Woman?s modesty and ignorance of danger often cause her to endure pains and suffer torture rather than consult a physician about important subjects. Pains in the head, neck, back, hips, limbs and lower bowels at monthly intervals, indicate alarming derangements. McELREE?S WINE OF CARDUI is a harmless Bitter Wine without intoxicating qualities. Taken at the proper time it relieves pain, corrects derangements, quiets nervousness and cures Whites, Falling of the Womb and Suppressed or too Frequent Menses. Price $1."
