Item description
On DVD or VHS:
A look back at KELSO, the only horse to win five Horse-of-the-Year Titles in racing history (1960-1964); his feats were legendary. For his career, the son of YOUR HOST-MAID OF FLIGHT, by COUNT FLEET, won 39-of-63 starts, earned $1,977,896 and retired as the world's leading money winner. He triumphed in 31 stakes, ran second in ten others and was third in another; seldom did he fail to bring home a piece of the purse.
Statistics tell only part of the KELSO story. He was more than numbers; he was a star, a genuine favorite with the fans. KELSO's appeal stretched beyond the track itself, and it seemed that the man on the street had heard of his racing exploits. Unlike all too many racehorses, KELSO wasn't here today and gone tomorrow; this gelding competed for eight seasons, from 1959-1966 and huge crowds frequently flocked to his races. His popularity continued throughout his career and he raced at fourteen tracks and won in six states.
See many of KELSO's most famous races starting with his 1961 New York Handicap Triple Crown races: Metropolitan/Suburban/Brooklyn; his 1962 and 1963 Woodward, fourth straight Jockey Gold Cup win in 1963; the race that put him over CITATION's $1 million mark; his thrilling duels with GUN BOW; his four attempts at the Washington D.C. International Turf with film footage of his 1961 loss to T.V. LARK, 1963 narrow loss to MONGO and finally his victory on his fourth try in 1964; and also his final race, the Stymie Handicap, in which he won after a brief comeback from retirement.
KELSO, one of the most beloved and courageous racehorses to ever grace a race track, can be a welcome addition to your horse racing collection.
AS AN ADDED BONUS...a few nice segments looking back on KELSO's legendary career are included after the main feature:
1) Highlights of KELSO's 1961 Brooklyn Handicap from TVG
2) A lengthy overview of his entire career
3) His four straight Woodward Stakes 1961-1964
4) A 100th Anniversary Claiborne Farm commercial of both KELSO and FOREGO (both foaled there)
And finally, AS A VERY SPECIAL ADDED BONUS...viewers are treated to a very rare and priceless segment of both KELSO and FOREGO shown together for the first time ever in the paddock at Belmont Park before the running of the 1983 Jockey Club Gold Cup. If this isn't enough, another future racing great, JOHN HENRY, is to run in this race and is shown being saddled in the outdoor saddling enclosure at Belmont Park. Then both KELSO and FOREGO are shown fully dressed and leading the way out of the paddock en route to the track to lead the post-parade. To make things even more nostalgic, retired track announcer Fred Caposella (the voice of New York racing for so many years) is brought out of retirement for the day to introduce 26-year-old KELSO and 13-year-old FOREGO to a packed grandstand at Belmont Park which drew a standing ovation for several minutes. This is the first and last time ever that all three beloved geldings: KELSO, FOREGO and JOHN HENRY would all be together at the same time as sadly, KELSO died the very next day. You've probably heard of this historic meeting of all three racing legends but now you can actually watch it in its entirety!
50 Minutes.
