Item description
Not counting tops of handles, about 4 1/8" tall and counting them 4 11/16".
Remarkable souvenir set of the early days of modern athletics. Three trophies won by the same individual at the same meet. Apparently they were removed from bases for storage, he was later on a Navy Officer and Surgeon and they travel a lot usually. Silver-plated. This group was only recently sold by the family, but not directly to me so I have not met them to ask any questions. When dealers buy an accumulation they might not sell or even sort it all at the same time. In this case some "marquee" items like his military medals from WWI were sold right away but it was not until later we knew of his athletic career. Check my other listings as I have a few more of his trophies to offer but this is the plum of the lot. With liberal but reasonable conclusions I have pieced together this short bio summary.

Louis Schwartz was a member of an Ashkenazi family that came to America in the last part of the 19th century and he may have been born in the "old country". His parents were blue collar working class. Louis was able to obtain admission to "The National Farm School" which was a comparatively new institute created largely to educate Jewish students for farming occupations . He had though an interest in medicine and even in 1904/05 a bright student was urged to become a doctor. Not having the means of his own for medical school Louis joined the Navy and through them advanced to become a surgeon. His skill helped reconstruct the bodies and lives of many US servicemen who returned from the First World War not whole
In his student days he was an outstanding sprinter and long jumper. He was in general a superb athlete and starting in his 40's and not stopping until he was in his 70's he entered Senior Tennis Tournaments and did well there also. I expect if there had been "Masters" track events in the 1920's he would have participated there also. He retired in New Jersey and for years enjoyed playing at the Indian Springs Country Club.
