Since an Oculus Rift runs into way more money than the average adventure seeker can afford, here is an affordable and effective alternative to get you started in the VR world. It's called the DODOcase Virtual Reality Viewer. It's a plain, basic cardboard box that transforms your smartphone into a VR viewer, and it takes less than an hour to assemble. With this minimalist gadget held to your face, and the appropriate apps downloaded onto your phone, it is possible to play 3D games, ascend the Grand Canyon, feel as if you are a part of an animated movie, take a virtual tour of the streets of Paris, ride a roller coaster, and view 360° surround-vision pictures.

The DodoCase viewer is made up of cardboard, along with adhesive, velcro and two convex lenses. Any modern smartphone up to 3" wide by 6" high can fit inside, placed horizontally with the screen facing the viewer's eyes. Smartphone apps built for VR will generally display two slightly different images on the phone's screen (like a ViewMaster reel viewer), which simulates stereoscopic 3D. The phone's built-in gyroscopes can detect the movements you are making by turning your head or looking up and down, and it moves the scenes to follow and coordinate. So, by simply turning your head or staring at select targets on the screen, you control and become a virtual part of the experience happening on your screen! It is so realistic that it is recommended that folks with balance or dizziness issues to be seated while using the device to prevent falling or experiencing motion sickness and nausea.
The lenses on the DODOcase VR Viewer are approximately 1 to 1.5" in diameter. They resemble the viewing lenses on the user's side of a pair of binoculars or a View Master. In fact, once it is assembled, cardboard viewer resembles a View Master in shape and size, and it even has a similar on-screen 3D effect, but the experience is user-animated and totally AWESOME. As for the various types and models of phones that will fit inside, we can't say for sure except to have you measure your phone. For testing purposes, we used an "old school" Galaxy Nexus (the original model, nearly 4 years old) that fits inside the viewer just fine and all of the apps we downloaded onto that phone run perfectly. So, if your Nexus 7 or other large screen late model phone doesn't fit, maybe you have (or can buy pretty cheap) an older, smaller phone that will that you can use just for the VR experience.
First, in order to measure or use any phone, it would have to be taken out of any protective case or sleeve you have it in. The DODOcase Viewer will accomodate a phone up to 3" wide and 6" high. iPhones have a special spacer (included) that must be used to accomodate them in the viewer. It does take some time and patience (30 minutes to an hour) to assemble the unit, but it is very much worth the effort. The manufacturer claims that it can be done in five minutes, but it takes that long just to separate the pieces and become familiar with them. They do make it as simple as possible with instructions printed right on the pieces. Just pay attention and don't rush yourself and your patience will be rewarded.
The virtual encounters are endless and thanks to the inspiring opensource Google Cardboard job, more programs and 3D environments are being created on a regular basis. There are already a lot of free apps available and new ones being created and released almost daily. You can even create and view your very own 3D content!
