Irish-born explorer Ernest Shackleton was a principal figure during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton's efforts contributed significantly to the exploration and discovery of some of the most remote areas of the planet amidst some of the harshest conditions. The Endurance remained trapped in pack ice before ultimately sinking into the Weddell Sea after two months. Hurley ventured to Antarctica numerous times and ultimately spent more than four years traveling to the continent and documenting these adventures with historical photographs.
