New Hampshire native Daniel Webster served in the U.S. Congress, representing his home state, and his work helped bring the Old Man of the Mountain to prominence. Later he would pen the iconic words regarding the distinctive structure "Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoemakers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men."
The Old Man of the Mountain also holds special significance in the traditions of the Indigenous legends of the area. When the structure collapsed in 2003, the Abenaki Tribe believed it was the completion and rejoining of the spirit to the Great Circle.
