ROYAL COPENHAGEN 1935 Christmas Plate

Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Castle is the subject of the 1935 Royal Copenhagen Christmas Plate, the 28th plate in the series that began in 1908 and continues to this day. It features a view of a Danish fishing boat with a Christmas tree attached to the top of the mast (a Danish tradition) passing near Kronborg Castle, located just north of Copenhagen. Built between 1574 and 1585, Kronborg Castle was originally constructed of red brick, later encased in sandstone. It is perhaps best known as the setting for Shakespeare’s play Hamlet.

Designed by Christian Benjamin Olsen (1873-1935), one of the great marine painters and a collectable artist in his own right. It is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen blue under the glaze, approximate diameter 7 ¼ inches (18 cm). The inscription includes the date 1935 and the word JUL -- the Danish word for CHRISTMAS (pronounced like the English work YULE). Pierced foot for hanging wire. Appropriately marked on the back, including the three wavy line trademark of Royal Copenhagen.
