Orion was the brain child of 3 UA executives that partnered with Warner Brothers in 1978. They built a reputation for quality story telling and cinematography while partnering with quality directors like Coppola, Cameron, Costner, and Woody Allen. Many young actors launched or popularized their careers at Orion including Brad Pitt, Uma Thurman, Robert Downey Jr, Danny DeVito, Mia Farrow, Charlie Sheen, Melanie Griffith, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jeff Daniels, Keanu Reeves, and many more.

The catalogue included cult classic horror like Monkey Shine and Opera, pushing boundaries. Their genres were diverse including drama, horror, and comedy. They created many important film motifs that persist in remakes today. No Mans Land preceded Point Break and the Fast/Furious franchise. Opera preceded the later 80's slashers. Colors created the cop on his beat drama genre. Their stories on AI and technology like Robocop are entertaining and thought provoking. Regardless of the movie, many stories today are still derivative and inspired by the Orion catalogue. Profits were strong through the 1987 and 1988 movie catalogue, but story telling quality began to suffer into 1989 with the flop Valmont. The brand's reputation waxed and wained until being sold to MGM in 1997.
