Eleanor Brackenridge, an advocate for women's rights, was the first registered female voter of Bexar County. John Coker fought in the battle of San Jacinto and was credited in part with the destruction of a bridge that prevented Santa Anna's troops from retreating. Lorenzo De Zavala and Jose Navarro were both signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. Germany wanted to colonize Texas and beginning in 1842 members of a society purchased tens of thousands of acres and settled thousands of citizens in New Braunfels, Fredericksburg and Castroville.
