When a desperate young man pumps five bullets into a successful
author as he leaves a New York club and then turns the gun on
himself, everyone wants to know why. 

The case is followed by Leader (Eric Stoltz), a young news 
reporter, who meets Emma (Jennifer Connelly) the manipulative 
sister of the killer.

She has had an incestuous relationship with Elliot (Dermot Mulrooney)
her brother and with Blair the author (Dennis Hopper).

Elliot was convinced that Blair had revealed their secret in his
latest novel. As Leader tries to piece together the story, he finds 
himself increasingly drawn to Emma, complicating the situation further.
