CIRCA 1885 – 1921, U.S. ARMY, RIFLE MARKSMAN, SHOOTING BADGE, STERLING, PINBACK

Hallmarked "STERLING"

The U.S. Army issued this style of silver bar for rifle marksman. During 1918 and 1919 the military officially suspended issue of metal shooting badges and substituted a cloth sleeve insignia, however, soldiers ignored the prohibition and wore badges which were made by private companies. In the early twentieth century the War Department authorized gold colored badges for the National Guard troops. Qualifications requirements for the gold colored badges were slightly less than for the silver versions.
