Drama starring Michel Piccoli as Gilbert Valence, a great star of the French theatre, who comes off stage one night to discover that his wife, daughter and son-in-law have all been killed in a car accident. Sometime later, Gilbert returns to the stage in a production of 'The Tempest', while also spending time caring for his orphaned grandson. When American film director John Crawford (John Malkovich) then offers him the part of Buck Mulligan in a new film adaptation of James Joyce's 'Ulysses', Gilbert finds himself forced to make a difficult life decision.
