THIS WEEK: the cover photograph of Louis Melancon fixes the climactic moment of Don Carlo, the struggle between church and state that takes place in the third act in the persons of the Grand Inquisitor (Hermann Uhde) and Philip II (Cesare Siepi) . Verdi's travels during the years immediately preceding the opera's composition are recounted by Mrs. Matz, while Mr. Matz marks the bicentenary of Schiller, from whose drama the libretto was taken. Eva Gerken sketches the portrait of the historical Elisabeth of Valois, William Ashbrook that of the nemesis who stalks many of Verdi's operas. Contributors Lingg and Whetstone pursue literary byways leading from the legend of Carlos; interviews focus on Fausto Cleva, who conducted his first Metropolitan Don Carlo a fortnight ago, and Claire Watson, soprano from Rochester who is winning success in Europe. Peter Paul Fuchs, president of the National Opera Association and director of opera at Louisiana State University, writes the first of two articles on the elusive element of style.

Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.
