Cultivated grape, Vitis vinifera is the grape used for all of the popular red wines: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and the list goes on. Key to making great wine is using this grape and then pairing the grape juice from this grape with a yeast that is bred for the wine of your desire.

The fruits ripen in September-October. The vines survive well when planted alongside hyssop, oregano and basil (Should "companion planting" be something you would wish to do...these are a great choice). The flowers are the first to bloom and are a yellow-green color.

Grapevines become heavy as they grow. Likewise it is best to twirl the vines or support them with a structure. Some use fences or simple posts with wires. This could be a great opportunity to grow something you will be proud to pass down as they live for 50-100 years!

How to Care for Vitis vinifera Grape Vines:
Grows best in loamy well drained soils of neutral acidity. Apply a 10-10-10 general purpose fertilizer treatment in the Spring, just when the buds appear. Keep vines well watered, and supported from stringing off unto the ground.

Germination Procedure: Soak seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours. Next, cold stratify seeds in the freezer to simulate winter conditions and thus break dormancy. Stratification time: 3 months. Next, plant seeds in moist peat kept around 20 degrees. Germination time is a couple months in the refrigerator for some seeds, and a whole 12 months for others.
