This embroidered and dyed, gold color Katabira, is a style of Japanese summer dress. It was created in the late Edo period and worn by high-ranking Samurai ladies.
The robe was made of a sheer, lightweight fabric. Something that would be cool to wear, often hemp, and it was unlined. It was worn over other garments.
The Katabira in this print has been intricately patterned with stencilled plant and tree motifs, using natural dyes. It has then been embroidered with tiny six-sided hexagon tiles. Each one has a flower in it, in gold and silk threads.
This style was also known as "Imperial Court dress."
