Carter, John, and Graham Pollard, AN ENQUIRY INTO THE NATURE OF CERTAIN NINETEENTH CENTURY PAMPHLETS, London: Constable & Co. Ltd., 1934.

1st ed. red cloth hardcover, 8vo (8.625 x 5.375”), t.e.g., very good / n.a, xii, 400pp.  Sans the dust-jacket, erased previous owner’s signature on front paste-down, a stain of some sort on the back board.

This is the one.  The book that exposed Thomas J. Wise (7 October 1859 – 13 May 1937): author, bibliophile,  bookseller and thief - and his prolific forgery scheme.  A very successful scheme one must add - in that despite this expose, he was never prosecuted; despite having stolen immense amounts of capital from unsuspecting clients who saw his credentials and integrity as unimpeachable.
