National Grandparents Day was proclaimed by President Jimmy Carter, in 1978. It was to be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. The idea of Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a woman in Fayette County, West Virginia, to help lonely seniors in nursing homes.

Grandmother was released at the same time as Grandfather.
