In the 1980s Swedish town of Blackeberg, young Oskar lives with his single mother and suffers the taunts of bullies at school. One night outside his apartment building he strikes up a friendship with his new neighbour, a mysterious young girl named Eli who only comes out after sunset and lives in an apartment with covered-up windows. Meanwhile, nearby townspeople begin to turn up drained of blood and Oskar and Eli's peculiar friendship begins to take a dark turn.
The film is more suggestive and ambiguous than the novel when it comes to the perverse. Eli's grotesque back story and relationship with her guardian are mercifully left very vague here. The two young leads deserve a huge amount of credit for their spectacular performances. In a year that marked a major turn in the pop culture fascination of vampires with offerings like 'Twilight', TVs 'True Blood' & 'Being Human', this is easily the best of the lot.
Lest one think there's no way the film can maintain its eerie balancing act throughout, the climax manages to top it with an unforgettable swimming pool sequence now justifiably regarded as one of the greatest set pieces in horror cinema.
